Rapid magnetic flux variability on the flare star CN Leonis
نویسنده
چکیده
We present UVES/VLT observations of the nearby flare star CN Leo covering the Wing-Ford FeH band near 1 μm with high spectral resolution. Some of the FeH absorption lines in this band are magnetically sensitive and allow a measurement of the mean magnetic flux on CN Leo. Our observations, covering three nights separated by 48 hours each, allow a clear detection of a mean magnetic field of B f ≈ 2.2 kG. The differential flux measurements show a night-to-night variability with extremely high significance. Finally, our data strongly suggest magnetic flux variability on time scales as low as 6 hours in line with chromospheric variability.

Ultra-high-time Resolution Observations of Radio Bursts on AD Leonis
We report observations of a radio burst that occurred on the flare star AD Leonis over a frequency range of 1120-1620 MHz (λ ≈18–27 cm). These observations, made by the 305 m telescope of the Arecibo Observatory, are unique in providing the highest time resolution (1 ms) and broadest spectral coverage (∆ν/ν = 0.36) of a stellar radio burst yet obtained. The burst was observed on 2005 April 9. I...
متن کاملThe moderate magnetic field on the flare star Proxima Centauri
We report moderate magnetic flux of 450 G< B f < 750 G (3σ) on the nearby M5.5 flare star Proxima Centauri. A high resolution UVES spectrum was used to measure magnetic flux from Zeeman broadening in absorption lines of molecular FeH around 1 μm. The magnetic flux we find is relatively weak compared with classical strong flare stars, but so are Proximas flaring rates and actual emission levels....
متن کامل2 00 1 The Giant Flare of 1998 August 27 from SGR 1900 + 14 : II . Radiative Mechanism and Physical Constraints on the Source
The extraordinary 1998 August 27 giant flare places strong constraints on the physical properties of its source, SGR 1900+14. We make detailed comparisons of the published data with the magnetar model, which identifies the Soft Gamma Repeaters as neutron stars endowed with ∼ 10 15 G magnetic fields. The giant flare evolved through three stages, whose radiative mechanisms we address in turn. The...
متن کاملMagnetar giant flares and afterglows as relativistic magnetized explosions
We propose that giant flares on Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters produce relativistic, strongly magnetized, weakly baryon loaded magnetic clouds, somewhat analogous to solar coronal mass ejection (CME) events. Flares are driven by unwinding of internal non-potential magnetic fields which leads to slow build-up of magnetic energy outside of the neutron star. For large magnetospheric currents, correspond...
متن کاملThe K - band intensity profile of R Leonis probed by VLTI / VINCI ⋆
We present near-infrared K-band interferometric measurements of the Mira star R Leonis obtained in April 2001 and January 2002 with the VLTI, the commissioning instrument VINCI, and the two test siderostats. These epochs correspond to near-maximum stellar variability phases ∼ 0.08 and ∼ 1.02 (one cycle later), respectively. The April 2001 data cover a range of spatial frequencies (31–35 cycles/...
